Smack Talk Heats up Between "Asphalt Chef" Competitors Heading to TMS for Charity Event
Playful jabs have been thrown, Crocs have been crushed and water has been boiled to intimidating perfection, but the “Smack Talk” war of words – and video – between the Asphalt Chef competitors is just heating up.
Celebrity chefs Mario Batali, Guy Fieri and Tim Love, along with Foreigner’s lead singer Kelly Hansen, have taken to YouTube with videos fueling the rivalry leading up to the Asphalt Chef grilling competition at Texas Motor Speedway on Saturday, Nov. 6, that will benefit the Speedway Children’s Charities-Texas Chapter and the Mario Batali Foundation.
Hansen, who is teamed with Fort Worth’s own Iron Chef champ Love, put on a display of his cooking “prowess” by demonstrating his amazing ability to boil water at a professional level. He also boasted of having the only true “rock star hair” among the contestants with digs at the ponytail of Batali and the spiked ‘do of Fieri.
Fieri, who is paired with 2004 Sprint Cup Series champion Kurt Busch for the competition, attempted to hit Batali where it really hurts – in his feet. Fieri used his Super Truck to run over a pair of Batali’s beloved orange Crocs. All in the name of fun, according to Fieri.
But Batali wasted no time with a rebuttal, standing outside of a T.G.I. Friday’s in New York City and insinuating that Fieri’s role as a restaurateur is limited to developing a menu for the chain restaurant. Does the “G” in T.G.I. stand for Guy?
Love also piled on Batali, mentioning his “insecurities” and that Batali fixed the competition when they participated in an Asphalt Chef media event in 2008.
With the confidence that only a four-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion can have, Jimmie Johnson has jumped into the fray to defend his teammate, Batali. Johnson comes across unpretentious but clearly focused on winning yet another championship. Fans can watch Johnson’s video, along with the rest of the Smack Talk series, on Texas Motor Speedway’s YouTube Channel (www.youtube.com/texasmotorspeedwaytv).
And more are on the way as the competition approaches and little time to get in that final jab.
The grilling competition is the centerpiece of the Asphalt Chef charity bash that will be held during the AAA Texas 500 race weekend at Lone Star Tower clubhouse pool outside of Turn 2 at Texas Motor Speedway. Asphalt Chef, which will run from 6:30-9:30 p.m. CT, will feature complimentary spirits and food, including a special dish from each of the celebrity chefs, for the party goers. There also will be live and silent auctions with unique items from each of the Asphalt Chef competitors as well as Hansen performing acoustic versions of a few of Foreigner’s biggest hits with bassist Jeff Pilson.
Tickets for the event are $250 and tax deductible. For tickets or additional information, please contact Speedway Children’s Charities at (817) 215-8421 or visit www.scctexas.org.
